Pornography Should Become Illegal
The Odyssey, written by Homer, tells the story of Odysseus and his adventures after the Trojan War. During Odysseus??™ travel, he became aware of the fact that he was going to be forced to sail near the island of the Sirens. The Sirens were sea nymphs who lured sailors with their songs. When the sailors heard their songs, they forgot all about their wives, children, and anything they held dear. Then, the sailors would jump overboard, their ships would crash, and the sailor??™s bodies would thrown across the rocks. Pornography is today??™s siren song. Its lyrics promise forbidden love, hidden knowledge of sexuality, and unimagined ecstasy. Pornography is said to be one of the leading causes of family problems because many men, women, and children end up shipwrecked with broken lives, and broken relationships.
When a viewer becomes addicted to pornography, he or she will sooner or later no longer get a thrill from viewing the porn. The viewer will decide to begin acting out his or her fantasies to receive the excitement he or she once received from viewing pornography. The pornography has shown to be destructive to one??™s beliefs and attitudes.
Donald Wildom of the American Family Association, stated that pornography has many diverse effects on people. It causes the person to maintain a sexual interest and provides fantasy material which is later reenacted in real life. It also dehumanizes women, reduces sex to a product, and causes the observer to show aggression towards women and children. The worst effect porn has on its viewers is that it causes men to be less inhibited about committing rape.
Pornography serves as a sexual manual for consumers. The viewers are led to believe that the way women are being treated in the film is the way all women want to be treated in real life. For example, men start believing that women enjoy being brutally raped. When, in actuality, the assumption is false. Women do not want to be viewed as a sex service for men.
Many studies have shown that pornography has very drastic effects on men. Many men who were guilty of committing rape were pornography addicts. These men viewed pornography regularly causing them to act violently towards others and view violent sexual crimes as less repulsive. Then, the effects would lead them to commit the violent crimes. Bill Marshall interviewed 120 men whom were convicted of raping women or molesting children. In 25 percent of the cases, pornography was found to be a significant factor in the occurrence of the deviant sexual acts. Another study done by Marshall showed that when men viewed pornography, they only viewed it with the intention of masturbating. Unfortunately, these men became aroused and decided to go out and assault a women or a child.
Pornography is now not only being viewed by adult men, but it is also being viewed by young children. The average boy in America will have already viewed pornography by the time he was 10 years old. 10 is an early age for children to begin viewing women as less than human and more as a sex product. The children will become accustomed to using women as a sexual release and then simply put them away for a later purpose. A 2001 report found that more than half of the sex offenders in Utah were adolescents. Children as young as 8 years old were committing felony sexual assaults. Therefore, pornography becomes a building block in a child??™s emotional and mental development.
People may argue that pornography is protected under the first amendment when in reality, it is not. The first amendment does not protect obscene material, libelous statements, or false advertising. I am sure that many people find pornography very pleasurable, but there are many who suffer because of it. And, even if it were protected under the amendment, would not the speech of those who were negatively affected by pornography overrule the speech of those affected positively
It is known that secondhand smoking kills, and it aggravates many people. The reason for the aggravation is because not only is the person choosing to kill themselves, but now they have the ability to kill someone else. So, if we become aggravated at the fact that secondhand smoking can kill, why not become aggravated at what amounts to secondhand rape Pornography, like the larva of a clothes moth, is eating away at the face of our nation. Fortunately, for us, we have the power to bring the curse of pornography to the light and have it destroyed.
