Pollution is the contamination of air, water, or atmosphere by substances that are harmful to the living organisms. It is caused by human activities such as spilling of oil and wasting poisonous material from industries and factories. It is also caused by natural disasters. Those natural disasters could be volcanic explosions. Volcanic explosions release gases that are dangerous to the atmosphere. Specifically, the three major types of pollution on the earth are land, water, and noise pollution.
First, land pollution is the damage of earth??™s surface by industrial, domestic, agriculture, and commercial activities. Certainly, dumping of industrial waste pollutes earth??™s natural surface. Mining, oil refineries, human sewage, deforestation, and littering are the other causes of land pollution. In addition, urbanization and industrialization are mainly responsible for polluting the natural surface of the earth. Urbanization is the growth of urban areas into rural areas due to the increase in population. Also, the movement of people from villages to cities causes land pollution because they are developing and industrializing the society. Industrialization is the process of converting an agricultural society to an industrial society??”introducing industry to the society. However, land pollution can be prevented by many different ways. Recycling, avoiding pesticides, littering waste, and dumping motor oil on the ground would help reduce land pollution. So would the use of organic food and reusable items.
Second, water pollution is the contamination of natural water by harmful substances that are discharged into large bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, groundwater, and oceans. It is mainly caused by the disposal of chemical substances from industries, human and animal waste, oil spilling, mining, pesticides, household chemicals, agriculture waste, and fertilizers. Additionally, bacteria produced from sewage and other waste material causes the water to be impure. This polluted water then affects plants, human beings, and other organisms living in the water. Moreover, diseases like typhoid, hepatitis, and diarrhea are caused by consuming bacteria from polluted water. The lungs and intestines can also be affected by impure water. After all, water pollution can be controlled by not throwing dangerous substances into water bodies. In addition, keeping harmful chemicals away from water, recycling of items that are hazardous, avoiding leakage of oil from cars, and not using pesticides would also help control water pollution.
Finally, noise pollution is the unwanted and unpleasant sounds from automobiles, airplanes, or industrial areas. Noise pollution sources include car horns, construction work, mechanical equipment, audio entertainment, factory machinery fireworks, and industrial tasks. It affects human health and human behavior as well. It can cause hearing loss, depression, stress, and sleep disorder. This eventually leads to other harmful affects like high blood pressure and heart diseases. Animals are also affected by noise pollution, which means the whole environment is affected by it. However, there are several ways to prevent noise pollution. They include avoiding horns, limiting vehicle speeds, limiting heavy duty vehicles, avoiding loud music, and using earplugs. Moreover, machines and vehicles should be maintained properly to avoid loud noises. Airplane noise can be reduced by using quiet engines. Also, walking or riding bicycles rather than driving a car would also help control noise pollution.
Pollution is causing diseases in the living organisms. It is infecting the environment and the atmosphere that we live in. In addition to the harmful aspects of pollution, there are several different kinds of pollution. The three major types have been described above as land, water, and noise pollution. In short, the main source of mostly all kinds of pollution is urbanization??”a shift from rural lifestyle to urban lifestyle. However, we should find out ways to prevent pollution of all kinds to make this world a better place. Reforestation is one way to make our surroundings healthy. It would help reduce the excessive amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To emphasize, we should avoid littering, prevent using items that are not recyclable and refrain from using chemicals that are harmful to the land, water, and air. Therefore, we must know the value of natural resources and advantages of them to prevent pollution and damage to our lives.
